Make sure you take it easy at any Cinco de Mayo celebrations you may partake in because there is plenty to do all weekend long!  For those looking to burn a few extra calories you can choose from Deer Dash in Deerfield or a unique charity bicycle ride with renown cyclist Jens Voight. Performance art lovers may enjoy Bach Week Festival or The Complete Works of William Shakespeare Abridged. And if you are looking for some family fun, there is the Glencoe Community Fun Fair, the ever-popular Kohls Children’s Museum Touch A Truck. Round out the weekend off with more food and drink at a special food tasting/discussion with author Beth Dooley at Found Kitchen. 

 

Bach Week Festival: “Virtuoso Soloists”
May 5: 7:30 – 9 pm
Nichols Concert Hall, 1490 Chicago Ave., Evanston 

“Virtuoso Soloists,” the second concert of the 44th annual Bach Week Festival, offers a keyboard extravaganza featuring international piano virtuoso Sergei Babayan of the Cleveland Institute of Music and one of Babayan’s former students, Southern California-based concert and recording pianist Grace Fong. Chicago Symphony Orchestra members Jennifer Gunn, flute, and Katinka Kleijn, cello, will perform solo works. Richard Webster, the event’s music director since 1975, will conduct the Bach Week Festival Orchestra. The Complete Works of William Shakespeare Abridged

Mother’s Day Tea Party

Glencoe Community Fun Fair

Enjoy bouncy houses, games, a DJ, face painting, arts and crafts, food and more! Everyone is welcome. Share Our Spare, an organization that collects new and gently used infant and toddler essentials and distributes them to local families in need, will have a truck onsite for those wishing to donate. 12th Annual Touch A Truck

Forget the toy trucks – here, children can get a close up look at the real things! Climb aboard many super-sized vehicles in a safe, protected environment. Food trucks, raffles, kiddie train rides, DJ, and other fun and entertainment will be on hand at this family fundraiser. New this year:

Deer Dash is designed for both beginning and experienced runners. The Deer Dash will help you sharpen your competitive skills in running and get in shape for other area events. There is enough to challenge competitors at all levels. There are no age group awards; everyone who finishes is a winner. Tasting the Midwest with Beth Dooley

While farm-to-table has become something of a catch-phrase in foodie circles, what does it actually mean when you live in a tough climate like the Upper Midwest? That’s a question Minnesota food writer Beth Dooley has spent the past 35 years exploring while getting to know a variety of foods as well as the farmers who grow them, the policies that govern production, and the cultures in which they have special meaning. During this special event, Beth discusses her book In Winters Kitchen: Growing Roots and Breaking Bread in the Northern Heartland. Attendees will receive one paperback copy of the book, plus a light menu of nibbles and two signature cocktails specially created for the event by Founds chef (and Minneapolis native) Nicole Pederson.
