The Village of Glencoe is located on the North Shore, about 20 miles from downtown Chicago. It lies just north of Winnetka and just south of Highland Park.
The population is 8,762, making Glencoe the third smallest North Shore village after Kenilworth and Northfield. Median family income is $200,000+. Strict zoning helps to maintain the spacious feel of the community. East of Green Bay Road, the lots tend to be larger and more spread out, with mature trees and manicured lawns. The central business district of the village is dotted with small boutiques, shops, cafes and a variety of professional services.
Glencoe has a mix of housing styles including traditional Tudors, Colonials and Georgians. There are also more contemporary homes here than you'll find in some of the other nearby villages. There is also relatively more new construction here than in Winnetka, Wilmette and Kenilworth.
Housing prices range from $350,000 to $5,000,000. The median list price is $1,200,000. Lakefront property is at a premium. Homes on the lake sell for $2,000,000 and up.
Glencoe's District 35 has three schools: South School (grades K-2), West School (grades 3-4) and Central School (grades 5-8). 9th graders go to New Trier High School's Northfield campus. Upper classmen attend New Trier's Winnetka campus.
The village has 18 parks, 2 outdoor ice rinks, 2 community centers, 3 golf courses, tennis courts and jogging paths and a nicely maintained beach. It is bounded on the west by forest preserves and on the north by the Chicago Botanic Garden.
Commuters can take the Union Pacific North Line train from Glencoe to downtown Chicago or north to Waukegan. Metra trains reach the Loop in 29 minutes by express and 38 minutes on the locals. Drivers can get to the Loop in about 30-40 minutes on the Edens Expressway (I-94), which is easily reached via Dundee Rd.
The movie, Risky Business, starring Tom Cruise was set in Glencoe, though it was actually filmed in Highland Park.
